Lech Majewski opens up the world of Jacek Malczewski, a symbolist painter who, at the turn of the 20th century, painted Poland—a country that didn’t exist on the map at the time. Its territory was divided between Russia, Austro-Hungary, and Prussia. Exploring the painter’s phantasmagorical imaginary in a wordless visual dialogue, Majewski creates his own vision of Polish history over the past two centuries. The figures in Malczewski’s canvases march through decades of history, fighting and escaping from successive oppressions. They become nomads traversing Siberia and endless fields, finally arriving at a contemporary, urbanized reality steeped in apathetic consumption.
