ULTIMUM IUDICIUM

ULTIMUM IUDICIUM
Lech Majewski

2025

Lech Majewski’s triptych of video frescoes was created using footage filmed during the break in the exhibition caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. During this time, Hans Memling’s Last Judgement, the most famous piece in the collection of the National Museum in Gdańsk, was removed from its display case for a condition inspection. This presented the artist with a unique opportunity to examine the painting’s intricate details through the lens of his camera. Over the following years, Lech Majewski used the recorded material to create a narrative offering a powerful and moving vision of the Last Judgement, enriched with animation and sound effects. The result is a modern Biblia Pauperum—a living form that vividly brings to life the stories captured in the painting over 550 years ago. As viewers follow the camera’s gaze across the details of the triptych, they rediscover its intricate, multilayered narrative.
